LENS SELECTION GUIDE

How to Choose the Right CS-Mount Lens

Selecting a suitable CS-mount lens requires matching the optical specifications to your camera and application. Consider the following factors before making a decision.

1
Check Sensor Size and Compatibility

Check Sensor Size and Compatibility

The lens must provide an image circle that adequately covers the camera sensor. Check the supported sensor format and confirm that the lens is compatible with your camera's mounting interface.

Camera Sensor Guide →
2
Determine the Required Field of View

Determine the Required Field of View

Your required field of view depends on the scene width, working distance, and camera installation position. A shorter focal length generally provides a wider field of view when other conditions remain the same.

3
Match Resolution to the Application

Match Resolution to the Application

Choose a lens that can support the sensor resolution and the level of detail required by the application. The megapixel rating alone does not guarantee sufficient image quality; optical performance across the sensor area should also be considered.

4
Select the Appropriate Aperture and Iris Type

Select the Appropriate Aperture and Iris Type

Aperture affects the amount of light reaching the sensor, exposure, and depth of field. Manual iris, DC auto iris, and P-Iris lenses provide different control methods, so select an option that is compatible with your camera and lighting conditions.

5
Consider Day-and-Night Imaging Requirements

Consider Day-and-Night Imaging Requirements

For cameras operating under both visible light and near-infrared illumination, verify the lens's spectral performance and focus characteristics across the required wavelengths. Do not assume that every security lens is fully IR corrected.

CS-Mount vs. C-Mount: What Is the Difference?

CS-mount and C-mount lenses are widely used in security cameras and industrial imaging systems, but they differ in their flange focal distance. While both use a 1-inch, 32-threads-per-inch mounting thread, they are not automatically interchangeable in every camera configuration.

CS-Mount
Flange Focal Distance: 12.5 mm
CS-Mount lens
Mounting Thread 1", 32 TPI (same as C-mount)
Flange Focal Distance 12.5 mm
Common Use Security cameras, IP cameras, compact systems
Key Feature Compact design, shorter flange distance
VS
C-Mount
Flange Focal Distance: 17.526 mm
C-Mount lens
Mounting Thread 1", 32 TPI (same as CS-mount)
Flange Focal Distance 17.526 mm
Common Use Industrial cameras, machine vision, high-resolution systems
Key Feature Longer flange distance, more optical flexibility
Important Note

A C-mount lens can generally be used on a compatible CS-mount camera with a suitable 5 mm spacer adapter. A CS-mount lens on a C-mount camera generally cannot reach the required focus because its flange focal distance is shorter.

CS-Mount Lenses for Smart Security

CS-mount lenses are used in compatible surveillance and network camera systems where focal length, aperture control, image resolution, and day-and-night performance must match the monitoring environment. Lens selection should account for the scene coverage, camera sensor, illumination conditions, and required image detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is a CS-mount lens?
A: A CS-mount lens is designed for cameras with a compatible CS-mount interface and a nominal flange focal distance of 12.5 mm. It is commonly used in security cameras and other imaging systems.
Q2: Can I use a C-mount lens on a CS-mount camera?
A: In many compatible configurations, a C-mount lens can be used on a CS-mount camera with a suitable 5 mm spacer adapter. Always verify camera compatibility and focusing requirements before installation.
Q3: How do I choose the focal length of a CS-mount lens?
A: Consider the sensor size, working distance, and required field of view. A shorter focal length generally provides a wider field of view under the same imaging conditions. Use a field-of-view calculator to estimate the required focal length.
Q4: What is the difference between manual iris, DC auto iris, and P-Iris lenses?
A: Manual iris lenses allow manual aperture adjustment. DC auto iris lenses use a compatible electrical drive to adjust the aperture according to light conditions. P-Iris lenses use a compatible control system for more precise aperture positioning. The appropriate option depends on camera compatibility and application requirements.
Q5: Are all CS-mount security lenses suitable for day-and-night imaging?
A: No. Day-and-night performance depends on the lens's spectral characteristics and focus behavior under visible and near-infrared illumination. Check the specified wavelength range and IR correction performance before selecting a lens.
